About These Documents

The purpose of these pages is to provide a rough guide to the basic Buddhist teachings in the Theravada ("school of the elders") tradition. It is intended to give the WWW-surfer a taste for what the Buddha taught.

Some of the terms used in these documents are Pali (the dialect of Sanskrit in which the Theravada texts are written). The reason for including these terms is partly pedagogical, but it is also because there are different and not universally accepted translations for them.

The documents found on this WWW server have been composed with the assistance of many people. Thanks goes to Barry Kapke at DharmaNet International, who has made a number of the Buddhist texts and commentaries available. Thanks therefore, to those authors and publishers who have made donated their wisdom. Thanks to the people who made comments on the structure of this web of information.
